Evalan

Evalan is a fast-growing and innovative development and engineering partner in the field of the Internet of Things. We cover the complete IoT stack and work in close collaboration with our customers on remote monitoring, sensor, and telemetry solutions in the industry, real-estate, healthcare and government sectors. We develop devices, sensors, data management systems, data processing algorithms, cloud applications and user interfaces for different platforms. We serve around 100 clients, ranging from large multinationals like Heineken and Unilever to government departments like the Ministry of Defence to hospitals and small technology companies. Evalan has been ranked by the Chamber of Commerce among the 100 most innovative small to medium-sized enterprises in The Netherlands on multiple occasions. Evalan was founded in 2005. From our offices in Amsterdam, we operate in over 50 countries.

Contribution to PLANtAR:

In the aforementioned ESEE project Evalan developed a wireless sensor network solution for buildings, which it further developed into a smart building infrastructure solution (marketed as “bGrid” – see www.bgridsolutions.com). This system has been installed in large office buildings in Europe and the US, and delivers several added value functions to building owners and users. Evalan wants to expand this solution with the sensor technology developed in this project. These sensors can then be added to the existing installed base for smart farming and home plant care and also used to strengthen the position of bGrid for future projects.

Project Vision

PLANtAR aims to develop cost-efficient, miniaturized, networked and partly biodegradable monitoring electronics to help tackle one of the world’s biggest challenges: producing enough food over 9 billion people while also protecting the environment. In order to solve the dilemma between high-yield intensive agriculture and environmental protection, cross-sector approaches are required, with digitization playing a key role.

Project Goals

New kinds of electronic sensors, actuators, networks and other digital technologies can increase efficiency and improve environmental sustainability in many agricultural applications. Whether in fields, in greenhouses or in the new domains of indoor and urban farming (which now accounts for 20% of global food production), digital technologies have the potential to enable holistic monitoring of production and growing conditions. Sensors can provide timely warnings of plant stress and / or diseases. By measuring factors such as soil moisture, EC and content of nitrogen, ammonia, surface temperature, solar radiation, CO2 and detecting pests and plant pathogens, digital technologies can help significantly increase yields per cultivated area. And at the same time, they can assist in reducing water, energy, fertilizer and pesticide use.
